“Is that all souls are for? For when we die?” is a famous quote from the novel "Rebecca", by Daphne du Maurier. The speaker is Mrs. Danvers, an antagonist that Rebecca meets on her first day at Manderley. Her character is based on Rebecca's Aunt Fanny, who was more or less emotionally abusive towards Rebecca.
She believes that all of the souls are there to serve God, but she believes that she is being punished by God for some sin she has committed before her death. The idea of serving God does not make sense to the speaker because she has seen many people who have lived their whole life without doing anything special or special enough to deserve heaven. She believes that what makes the world go round are people who haven't done anything "very important" in their lives.
They are the ones who are alive, and they are all there for a reason, which is to live.
